How do I prevent full-screen windows and show the menu bar in macOS Tahoe?

I upgraded to Tahoe on my MacBook Pro and like it= but for some reason the windows now open entirely full screen, even blocking out the Menu bar at the top - I want the Menu bar to be seen and the windows not taking over. How do I set up this?

Apps should not open in Full Screen unless you…

  1. click the green grow button
  2. have Tiling enabled and you drag a window to the top of the screen
  3. press Control+Command+F

You can disable Tiling in System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Windows > Drag windows to the menu bar to fill screen

You can also set the menu bar to "Always" show in System Settings > Menu Bar.
