iPad: Gmail account setup fails due to disabled cookies

I can't set up a Gmail account on my iPad, I get the message 'cookies are disabled'. Chrome is my default browser, and have not had a problem until today. Chrome supposedly has cookies enabled by default and I have not changed anything. I've enabled them on Safari and Edge, but still the same. Any ideas?
