Anyone else have selection Text to Speech (tts) problems?

I just "upgraded" to Tahoe 26.1. I use text to speech to check documents after I wrote them to find errors. It no longer works. What used to be 'read selection' now starts reading at the beginning of the document no matter what I select. Moreover, tts voice quality is as atrocious as it was before the upgrade. The 'premium' voices are only slightly better than the spoken voices on an Altair 8800. While openAI and Google offer fantastic tts voices,
