Battery Alert Notification Missing

I am not getting any sound notification when the battery is low. There does not seem to be any setting for this in System Settings Battery is not listed in notifications. Do have to install a third party app to get this?

Other sound alert notifications are working.

OS is Sequoia with current updates. Laptop is a MacBook Pro 15.1 recently installed a few months ago.

First, the latest version of Sequoia is 15.7.2, so you are way behind and should update to the latest version. You may be able to install Tahoe as well depending on the model/age of your Mac.

I have never received a sound notification when the laptop battery is low but a message box does appear in the upper right of the screen indicating that the battery level is low when it is below 5% or 10% (I don't remember what the threshold is precisely). Then a second notification appears when the OS will force the Mac to sleep shortly due to low battery level. The Mac sleeps within a minute or two after that second notification.

These are notifications that are built into the MacOS and they are visual, but soundless.

I don't recommend it but you can install third party apps to do a fancier job of low battery notification that can be customized. I don't recommend it because my approach is always "keep it simple" and between the built it battery level display in the menubar and the existing notifications, that is fine for me. Installing additional things like this can add complexity to your setup, especially when future upgrades or updates are applied, so I wouldn't. But if you want to, simply search for "mac low battery level notification app" and you will see MANY such apps that will do what you are looking for.

On macOS, the Internal Low Battery alert does not have a user-configurable notification sound, and in many builds of macOS, it is intentionally silent.

Apple does not expose any setting in System Settings → Notifications to change or enable a sound for battery alerts.

System-level battery alerts are handled by the power management subsystem, not the regular Notification Center.

Use a third-party menu-bar battery monitor

Apps like:

  • AlDente Pro
  • Battery Monitor
  • Endurance
  • BetterBattery (SetApp)

Thanks for the reply Steve,
First , Actually Tahoe was recently released on September 15, 2025, not even 3 months ago. Most people would not consider that way behind. Just because there is a new OS out does not mean you have to install it if you are happy with the current OS as I am.
Second I know you are not a programmer for Apple so this is really a message to Apple not you.

Your original post indicated 15.1, which is quite a few updates behind 15.7.2 ... hence my comment. That said, I don't think the low battery notification was changed between 15.1 and 15.7.2 ... nor with Tahoe. Each of these updates for Sequoia does fix bugs and improve security so it is best to apply them. As for Tahoe, I have not applied it yet myself so I understand you wanting to wait on that. I usually wait until the .2 or .3 updates are made available, to fix early releases.

Apple programmers don't actually read these posts in Apple Discussions, the Discussions are really only for users to post queries and other users to offer solutions or information. Apple has a separate Feedback site for feature requests, changes and bugs to be submitted. Product Feedback - Apple If enough people post feedback about an audible low battery warning, the programmers might become involved.
