Remove MDM from iPhone 13

When I left my old job I was allowed to keep an iphone 13 that was issued to me. It still has the ""iphone is supervised and managed by..." message o the settings screen and what I assume is a MDM profile installed from the company.

I have contacted them and asked for them to remove the MDM profile, which they say they have done by the message and profile are still there. This is preventing me form installing a MDM profile for my new job, which is annoying as I can't get work emails on phone then.

I tried resetting it and restoring from a backup but didn't remove it the profile.

Old job, and some online research, says I might need to to a factory reset and not restore from a backup. Is it possible to do this but get back the 10 years of photos, notes, passwords etc etc?

The apple ID used is my personal one.

Unfortunately, you have already answered your own question earlier in your post.

"I have contacted them and asked for them to remove the MDM profile, which they say they have done by the message and profile are still there."

That MDM profile will remain on your phone until your old company removes it, which they obviously have not done.

You can perform a Factory Default Reset on your phone, but the MDM profile will still be there, no matter whether you use a backup or don't use a backup of the phone.

There are some posts on this community suggesting you need to reset the device even if/once the organisation has removed the MDM profile to actually remove it? Can anyone confirm or provide an alternate optionion?

And if I do have to factory reset, is there a way to start fresh but keep some of my data, settings, apps, notes, photos, passwords etc, as a full restore seems to bring the MDM back.

maybe i haven’t explained this very well. i’ll have another go in steps already taken:

  1. ive asked them to remove profile
  2. they advise they have, and i need to reset device for this to take effect. there seems to be conflicting advice in different places on this.
  3. i reset device and restored from a back up but MDM still there.

can anyone confirm if i need to do a full fresh setup/non-restore reset to remove the MDM.

and if yes, is there a way to get any of my pics/notes/apps/settings etc restored?

Simply powering the iPhone off and then back on would constitute a "reset".

Your former company did not remove the MDM Profile. If they had, you would not see it after you restarted the iPhone.

If you perform a Factory Default Reset, this will erase your personal data on the phone.....but....it will not erase the MDM settings on the phone.

You will lose all of your personal data unless you have a backup that you can use to restore back to the phone when you set it up again. But, there is no need for you to do this because the MDM settings will not be removed from the phone during this process.
