CarPlay is broken: can’t hear other iPhones when calling.

Does anyone have a work around or know of a fix for this?

For background, it all worked fine until a few months ago (I think around the 18.0 update). Since then, whenever I made or receive a call from another iPhone I can’t hear the other person and they can’t hear me. I have to put them on speaker to hear them.

I was hopeful the iOS 26.1 update might include a patch but alas not.

(other details in case it helps anyone compare, I’m in Aus and this issue is on a 2016 Hyundai Tucson.

Troubleshooting CarPlay:

A. Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Being there is not CarPlay feedback option, you'll need to use the iPhone feedback link, provided below. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: on when this issue began and how you've troubleshot it, thus far. Include the URL of this thread.
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

B. Update your Stereo's Firmware:

In my car, I can update the firmware of it, through my iPhone. It fixed it. So, do the same, if an available option.

C. Driver's Manual:

Read your driver's manual to find out more about syncing this.

D. Try being in Park:

For many, they must have their automobile in park to get this to all pair.

If CarPlay doesn't detect your iPhone, make sure CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions are turned on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is enabled. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, and then tap Forget This Car.

If you're still having trouble with your car's audio system using CarPlay or Bluetooth, try the Aux cable. To get it fixed, there are two options:

  1. Take your car to a reputable car dealer or car audio specialist. They have experienced technicians who can diagnose the problem with the Aux cable. This could be a loose connection, a faulty cable itself, or an issue with the system's Aux port. They'll be able to repair the issue or recommend a replacement cable if needed.
  2. Consult your car's infotainment system manuals. These manuals often include troubleshooting sections that might address common Aux cable problems. You might find instructions for resetting the system, cleaning the Aux port, or confirming the cable's compatibility.

Before taking your car to a dealer, it's always a good idea to check the manuals first. This can sometimes save you time and money if it's a simple fix you can handle yourself. However, if the manuals don't offer a solution, or you're uncomfortable tinkering with the system, then a car audio specialist is the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestions. To clarify,

  • CarPlay works for all other apps. eg I can listen to music, use maps and give instructions to Siri.
  • Im using a wired connection to the car. If I simply Bluetooth (so no CarPlay) I can make calls but don’t have any other functions (maps).
  • I too the vehicle to a service centre and they confirmed the car’s software and hardware are all fine.

I suppose this is why I feel stuck. I’ve tried most of those remedies.

thanks for the help
