App Store in wrong language…

The language of the App Store is not correct (one more topic about this…) !

I live in Switzerland (where there is many official languages) but I am foreigner.

  • my iCloud region settings are set to Switzerland
  • my phone settings language is set to Chinese and then French

In this configuration, the App Store will be in German

  • if I set my phone to French, then the App Store will be in French

—> it’s impossible to have my phone in Chinese and the App Store in French (I guess the App Store is not smart enough to chose the second compatible language and chose the default language).

Change only the App Store language by changing the storefront region

If you change your App Store region to France, all of the following become true:

  • App Store supports Chinese → YES
  • App Store supports French → YES
  • App Store will display in Chinese (your 1st language)
  • If not Chinese, it will fall back to French, not German

BUT:

Changing region has consequences:

  • Requires payment method from new region
  • You lose access temporarily to Swiss-specific apps
  • Requires zero balance (no credit)

This works technically, but not ideal.

Thank you for the input. This could « technically works », but is really not possible for daily use :

  • you need a paiement method from France (I’m not French…)
  • you don’t have access to specific Swiss app (for instance banking app or local app)

in my case, the solution is : every time I want to access the App Store, I need to change my phone language to French. Once I finished, I set it back to Chinese.

this proves once again (this problem is so many years old) that Apple does not consider multiple languages countries or people speaking more than one languages 😮‍💨.

Each region has its own App Store. Four languages are spoken in Switzerland and I believe there used to be only one language available for the stores, German. If they are up to two now then that's nice. I would not, however, expect it to be available in Chinese. I suspect if it sees a primary setting for Chinese then it defaults to the primary store language, German.

The problem is a little different from what you describe. The Swiss AppStore has always been available in Italian and German. I just wish that when the language of the iPhone is something other than one of these languages, we can choose which of these languages to display (and not just take the German language by default).

This is a problem known for several years and nothing is done to improve this situation. It would be enough to simply take the second compatible language in the iPhone settings, but it seems too complicated.

Are you sure about the banks not being in the French app store?

I use my UK profile on app-store and have no issues finding Swiss banks.

Find banks from many continental countries.

I only very rarely have to resort to swap to my 2nd Apple ID as a work around. Longer ago, it was a more persistent problem.

I know it needs a french billing address, but that is to solve creatively.

It does accept all mayor EU/UK cards and Paypal as well
