The intermittent charging issue on my MacBook M2 persists even after repair.

Hi everyone,

I’m posting here because I’ve been dealing with a confusing and frustrating issue with my MacBook, and I’m hoping someone might have guidance or similar experience. A few months ago, my MacBook (M2) started having an intermittent charging problem — the MagSafe light wouldn’t turn on consistently, and sometimes the charging would only start after unplugging and reconnecting multiple times.

I took it to an Apple Store and the MagSafe charging module was replaced. For a short while it seemed fine, but then the same issue returned:

  • The charging light fails to turn on occasionally
  • Sometimes I have to press or adjust the connector
  • I have video recordings showing the issue clearly

When I went back to the store, I was told something unexpected: they said the previous repair package had not been fully removed, which is considered a service mistake. Because of this, the repair wasn’t properly closed in their system, even though the part was replaced and the device was handed back to me as “repaired.”

I was then advised to bring my MacBook again, but only “when I can manage without it,” and possibly leave it for 1–3 weeks so they could test it. As a student who uses the device daily, this is extremely difficult for me — and I’m concerned the issue may worsen over time.

Right now the problem still appears occasionally, not every day, but enough to worry me.

What concerns me most is that I’ve already had a repair, yet the issue persists, and the service record situation has become confusing due to the earlier mistake.

Has anyone else dealt with a repeated charging issue like this after a repair?

What would be the best way to proceed — ask for further escalation, request a proper second repair record, or insist on a more thorough evaluation?

Any help or advice would mean a lot.

Thank you in advance.

Most likely the Logic Board is bad. I've seen this with multiple MBPro M2 laptops 2022/2023.

You may be able to use a USB-C charging cable to get by in the mean time.

However, keep in mind you have a 90 day part/repair warranty so if you want to have a free repair you will need to do so within that time frame (you may still need to pay more depending how the repair was performed).

Any issues that arise from the previous repair can only be addressed by Apple themselves.

I already gave the computer for repair. However, a short while after the repair, the same problem has occurred. Then I went to Apple again for repair, they asked me to give the computer again for repair and they let me know that it would take about 20 work days, again. But I am a university student who is about to graduate, and I have projects that I have to deal with, via computer. I also study in a city away from Istanbul. So it is not an option for me to give my computer away for about a month. After they let me know that they need the computer back for about a month, I contacted client services. That did not work as well. They wanted me to bring the computer whenever my classes end, which is not very soon. I rely on my computer and I need to be able to access it sustainably. But this problem makes it hard for me to use the computer as I expected, as I often have to deal with the charging problem. And I really need help, not disregard.

Unfortunately it seems these are your options:

  • Repair the computer, it takes as long as it does....there is nothing you can do about the repair time
  • Continue using the computer as is & deal with the issues until you can get it repaired again & hope it keeps working (you better not miss that 90 day part/repair warranty window or you will be paying a lot of money)
  • Purchase a new or used computer so you can continue your classes & work

Make sure you have frequent & regular backups in case this laptop dies completely. Apple will not do this for you and even an expensive professional data recovery service may not be able to recover any files. I would highly recommend one of your backups is made to a USB drive formatted as exFAT using Disk Utility so that you can access that data from any computer or OS just to be safe since you need access to your data immediately just in case you find yourself using an older Mac or a Windows computer until you get the laptop repaired.

FYI, it is generally a good idea to have a second device, even if it is older so you have something to use when something unexpected happens, especially if you have critical work or deadlines and cannot be without your main device. And backups are critical to safe guard your important files.

It is your choice how you proceed going forward.
