Am no expert in this area, yet your post to the community deserves some response.

Seems most movie-software uses the horizontal format / ie: for viewing on tv / computer full-screens.

Setting up, or refining the project settings to suit before beginning a project usually works best.

Wondering which project settings you have in place,

and wheher changing those settings now would help or hinder your project plans:

Apple support's article: Change project settings in iMovie on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

1. In the iMovie app  on your Mac, click Settings in the upper-right corner of the timeline.
2. The project settings appear. At the top of the project settings, you can see the resolution your project is set to (based on the first clip added to the timeline)."

Then choose:

• "Have iMovie automatically add titles and transitions to your movie: Select the “Automatic content” checkbox."

ie: If it was already selected, you might try deselecting it ... or vice versa :-)

Could you possibly post a screen shot of your timeline preview window that depicts the issue?

But want this . . .

In the second shot I used the return key to make the text fit the vertical aspect image.
