3G iPod not shwoing up and failing iTunes restores

I recently got a 3G iPod classic which already had rockbox installed on it. When I connect it to either my windows pc or my mac, it doesn't show up at all in finder/explorer or iTunes/Music with different leads and drives - another 40gb drive from a 4G (which works) did nothing - which means I can't uninstall rockbox or restore.

It breifly showed up when I put in a flash drive from another iPod, but when I went to restore it, it came back with error code 1437, and the drive had an error: 'incorrect function' when trying to access it.

The drive doesn't sound bad, theres no clicking, and seems to get to speed quickly and not fluctuate.

It does turn on and work with rockbox and the normal UI.

Any ideas on what is wrong?
