Mail was lost, not moved

In Mac Mail, in Sequoia 15.6.1. I tried to move an email from Sent (Exchange) to a folder on iCloud. Usually that works. This time I got a popup that said something about "can't move message ... server busy ... try again later...." I don't remember all of it because I dismissed the popup. But I can't "try later." The email is gone. It isn't anywhere. Mac Mail lost it. Where is it?

No, it couldn't be on the mail server where I get my email from, because I didn't get it from outside my own computer. It's sent mail. But I looked there anyway, and of course it's not there.

It seems to me that Mac Mail is doing something stupid. When it moves a message, it apparently deletes it from the old location before putting it in the new location. If it can't go there, it's lost. The smart thing is to copy it to the new location and then delete if from the old location if and only if there's no error.

AlWeir, what should I be looking for in the Mailbox Behaviors and the Rules? I didn't see anything in the Mailbox Behaviors that would delete that message. I don't see how Rules would have any effect because they're applied only when a message arrives in the Inbox, and this message was in Sent.

I did a search in Mail as soon as I got worried that the message was gone.

As far as I can tell there's nothing I did that would account for the loss of the message. I routinely move sent messages to mailboxes I created in iCloud if I think they're worth keeping, and this is the only time I lost one, when Mail told me it couldn't move the message.
