Error displaying Album Art in iTunes browser view

I have been using iTunes for Windows for 20+ years without issue, but recently have found Album Art missing from the browser. Currently using version 12.12.5.8

Example:

All of the artwork is my own, I don't retrieve album art from Apple. This is only happening to a small minority of albums, but continues to affect new albums sporadically. The art obviously remains intact on the ID3 tags. Searching the forums, I see users recommending to delete the Album Art cache folder, and let iTunes rebuild the database. First I want to confirm this is a safe practice (should I backup the itl/xml files and cache folder beforehand?) Second, even if rebuilding the art database corrects the current errors, this issue has continued to occur in new albums, little by little - what caused this malfunction to start happening after decades of use? Won't the errors just start over again once I rebuild the database?

Thank you very much for your help!

See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows - Apple Community in case this is a multiple ID3 tags issue. It is possible Windows Explorer is displaying an embedded artwork image in a tag that iTunes doesn't see.

Failing that then yes, deleting the Album Artwork folder inside your iTunes folder will completely reset the iTunes artwork cache, forcing it to be regenerated from any embedded artwork, with other images being fetched from the iTunes Store if no local image is found, provided you are signed into the store and have allowed for this. If all images are embedded then it should rebuild correctly.

You should ideally backup everything before making changes. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy - Apple Community for the method I use.

I don't believe this issue is a security permissions and/or multiple id3 tags problem, though. In the screen image below, iTunes is not displaying the thumbnail artwork in browser view, while simultaneously displaying the same artwork properly in the "song info" view:

Sometimes (but not always), merely opening the "song info" view is enough to force back the artwork to display properly in the browser view. This is occurring in a small minority of albums (I would guess 100 out of a total of nearly 11,000 albums) - but new examples continues to sporadically pop up, which makes me wonder if rebuilding the artwork database will actually end the problem?

Thanks again for your help

One more weird behavior:

"Sometimes (but not always), merely opening the "song info" view is enough to force back the artwork to display properly in the browser view"

From playing around with this issue just now, I've discovered that iTunes will force the artwork back into the browser view if "song info" is opened for the first track of the album only, but will not work if "song info" is opened for any other tracks. Anyone have similar experiences?

Hi,

In the past I've found scrolling though the library in the Albums view has been sufficient to repopulate the cache, but I understand the concern if you've already ascertained that the data is there but it's not currently shown, particularly if you can sometimes persuade iTunes to expose it.

I have a script called UpdateTagInfo which should force iTunes to update its own database to reflect any differences that are present in the file tags. This should allow it to update the cache where there is an image already present in a file's tag that is not currently displayed, unless the cache is genuinely broken in some way, in which case why would current workaround work. FWIW I think the artwork cache is/was originally based on the first track in the database from any given album that had artwork, which isn't necessarily track one, but that code could well have changed over the years.

Other scripts you could potentially find useful are:

  • CreateFolderArt - Creates or updates Folder.jpg artwork images. If updating images then if at least one track has art it will be embedded in any tracks from the same album that are missing artwork or only have store downloaded art.
  • EmbedFolderArt - Embeds the largest image (by area) stored in the same folder as each processed track. Any "store downloaded" artwork is saved as iTunesArt in the same folder as the song and may be subsequently embedded if it is the largest image.
  • EmbediTunesArt - Creates a cache of iTunes downloaded or embedded artwork, then embeds art into any track that doesn't have embedded art. Unlike CreateFolderArt or EmbedFolderArt this script can be used when you might have tracks from different albums stored in the same folder.
