MacBook Pro crashes at night when entering sleep mode - kernel panics - sleepimage corrupt?

Hi, I use a MacBook Pro 16" (MacBookPro16,1), 2.6 GHz, 6-Core Intel Core i7, 23 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, with MacOS Tahoe 26.2 .

For the past few weeks since upgrading to macOS Tahoe, I've been experiencing crashes at night when my MacBook goes into sleep mode. The next morning, when I try to use it, I get the startup screen followed by an error report that I can send to Apple.

I've found that I can fix the problem by setting the hibernation mode from the default "3" to "0" (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0). This prevents the sleep image (/private/var/vm/sleepimage) from being written, and there are no crashes or kernel panics. The sleep image is then deleted.

If I then reset the hibernation mode back to "3" (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3), a new sleep image is written and the MacBook works perfectly again.

I found little information about this online. Most recommendations include an Apple Hardware Test, a restart in safe mode, or a restart in Recovery Mode (CMD-R or Option-CMD-R), followed by a check with Disk Utility. But for me, everything was fine, no problems found.

(By the way, I noticed that in recovery mode First Aid on the root drive aborts with an error message, but runs smoothly and without errors in normal operating mode... Has anyone else observed this?)

I'd be interested to know if anyone has experienced something similar and what their solution was?

It sounds like your system is having Kernel Panics. Post several of the Kernel Panics here so we can examine them for possible clues. Kernel Panics are located in "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports" with file names containing kernel and/or panic. If there are no such files in that folder, then check the "Retired" subfolder.

FYI, more than likely you have a hardware issue with this laptop. This exact model laptop has an extremely high rate of failure for its Logic Board. Plus hardware issues are most likely to show up when the system wakes up or powers on. You are just temporarily covering up the problem.....at some point this "fix" will fail and by then the computer may no longer be able to boot.

I hope you have good backups of your computer because you are probably going to need them very soon.

I found 20 Logs "Kernel_2025-12-18-XXXXXX_MacBook-(my Name)" starting with nearly the same:

Will do a backup.

The main board was replaced by apple due to faulty ram cells 2 years ago. So far no hardware issue found with apple diagnostics and "rember" or first aid on the ssd. Also did a reinstall of Tahoe 26.2 in recovery mode.

Forgot to mention you would need to use the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper on the forum editing toolbar in order to post the Kernel Panics since the main forum editing window has a 5K character limit.

However, your laptop has been experiencing "GPU Restarts" which is a one of the common problems with this particular model laptop which indicates a hardware issue is the most likely cause of the problem, especially when combined with the problem occurring when waking up the laptop from sleep.

Personally I don't recommend spending any money on repairs to any Intel Mac, but especially not this specific model, for multiple reasons.....you have already encountered the main reason twice now......faulty Logic Boards. The money spent on repairs is better put towards a new laptop.

It's possible that the cause of this GPU problem was an old program from a previous MacBook Pro, transferred via Migration Assistant: gfxCardStatus - "an unobtrusive menu bar app for OS X that allows MacBook Pro users to see which apps are affecting their battery life by using the more power-hungry graphics".

Certainly outdated by now.

I also ran EtreCheck and found some inactive entries that I will delete.

If I understand some online sources correctly, macOS "Tahoe" seems to have power management issues, especially on Intel Macs, which can lead to unstable sleep or wake-up situations, including kernel panics. All my hardware tests so far have shown no problems. Elsewhere, Hibernation Mode 25 is recommended (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25 => for disk hibernation).

Currently, everything is working fine with the existing Hibernation Mode 3.

I'll make regular Time Machine backups and wait for the update to macOS Tahoe 26.3;

It is also noticeable that in the activity monitor the process "WindowServer" uses a lot of GPU time and prevents hibernation!
