I saw a black oblong shape at the top of my MacBook Air M1 2020 screen. What was that?

What is that black oblong shape at the top-center of my MacBook Air M1 2020's screen? I took a screenshot and drew an arrow pointing to it to show what I'm talking about.

MrHoffman:

Just happened to find a 'free app' of untested quality

~IF safe & works, item is named TopNotch for macOS.

Further link may help https://topnotch.app/

..while None of my gear is this modern, i do read a lot..

Perhaps this may [or not] be useful to go Notch-less?

.edited to add, this app may not be Free, but may be.

Anyway temps here without chill, are going below -14°F.

maybe for next few months; until sun helps warm Earth.

Should get much colder, before those Late June days!

The notch is some display decoration and UI info around the gap for the camera. The display decoration can probably be suppressed, but there’s still going to be a gap within the display there.

From what I recall of the photo, it looked like the notch (and some personal info, which is probably why it vanished), so I guessed the Mac wasn’t an M1. If this is an M1, then some local app sure looks like the notch.
