Creation of a customized memory video in Photos

My iMac has the latest software Tahoe 26.2 and an M1 chip, but in Photos I dont get the “Memories” drop down menu. I want to Create a Memory Video but I get a message saying “Creation Unavailable ..More photos and videos need to process to create a Memory”.  The feature exists on the Photos menu (File>New Memory Movie) but it does not appear in my Photos..

In Photos on macOS Tahoe you can create a new Memory Movie by creating an album, then playing this album as a slideshow. The instant slideshows are Memory Movies.

  • Just ctrl-click the album in the sidebar and use the command "Play Slideshow".
  • Then hit the spacebar to pause it.
  • Now go to "File > Export > Export Memory Movie" to save the new Memory Video.

There is also a generic memory "Type to Create" to create a new memory. In that case you enter a description and Photos will use Artificial intelligence to create a new memory based on the description. But this will only work, after your library has been fully scanned after the upgrade and the Photos Library is large. Have you been using this command?

That's pretty cool! But I realized that anything I could think to type was already a keyword. In fact, this might be a nice way to add new keywords…

I don't know-- I tried Butterflies, and I got several pictures with no butterfly in them. I tried "HMS Victory" and got a Memory called "Victory's Grand Voyage over the years" with pictures of submarines, whaling ships, the Golden Hinde, the USS Missouri, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, a ferry, some small boats, and a few pictures of HMS Victory.

Admittedly , the Band playing at the Changing of the Guard is close t the Victoria Memorial (though not pictured) with "Winged Victory" on top. Really?

Thank you Léonie, that was helpful, I managed to create a Memory Video, but I still do not understand why I dont get the drop down in the Memories section in Photos, and moreover, why do I get the following message when I click on File>Memory Movie>.....“Creation Unavailable ..More photos and videos need to process to create a Memory”. I cant figure this out... would you know why this happens?

Thank you again, and MERRY XMAS!

I don't get that message.

But when I am viewing the Memories Collection I am getting an option to create a memory in two places - a button on the first Memory in the list, and a menu item in the File menu:

But both items are using generative artificial intelligence to create a memory based on all photos in the library, they need the curated selection of images and faces. We cannot use it starting from an album with selected photos. We have to describe the memory verbally. So the scan of the library for object recognition and scene recognition and face recognition has to be complete. Perhaps you have not yet named enough faces? The automatic creation of memories prefers memories based on people. I have seen a similar error message for the face recognition. Photos used to complain that it cannot complete the Faces album for some people. It seems to need more than one photo with a named face, where it could detect the face itself, to be able to recognize the person again in other photos. As I could not add more photos of these people, because I have met them only once in my life and had only one photo, I imported some duplicates of this photo to satisfy the face recognition.

So far I could not create any memory using the AI tools that I really wanted to create. This tool has similar limitations as the Image Playgrounds. They are nice for scenes with family events, but I am doing mostly landscape and wildlife photography. When I use the search term "Volcanic calderas" to create a memory of the calderas I have seen or "Waterfalls" to find my landscape photos sorted thematically, the AI will present mostly the photos where a family member walked into the shot.
