Are you going to mail.google.com? I'm not a Gmail user, but that's what a Google Search revealed. Why don't you add your Google Mail Account to the Mail App on your iPad?

If using a browser to access Gmail, have you signed-in to Google Mai?
As suggested by lobsterghost1, the simplest and most consistent method of accessing Google Mail (and any other email accounts) from your iPad is to consider using the native Mail App. Your email accounts are simply added from iPad settings:
Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account
Simply select your the mail provider from the list - and follow the prompt to add the account.
