If you EVER want to download or update Apps on your new iPad, you MUST add a credit card to your Apple Account. You don't ever have to use the card for anything if you don't want to buy anything. But without a valid payment tied to your account, you won't be able to use the App Store, even for free apps.

I'm in my 70s. My husband nearly 80. It saddens me when I see someone claim age as a reason for avoiding technology. Why would you buy something if you don't plan on using it to its fullest capabilities?

Age has no bearing upon our use of technology. Many senior contributors here have a few more years on the clock - and some are not so far behind. 🙂

ApplePay, should you even choose to use it, is one of the most trusted and secure payment methods available. It is designed to ensure that your actual Credit Card details are never exposed to a retailer. Each transaction is one-time; transaction details, if intercepted, cannot be reused by a bad actor to commit fraud. In summary, Apple Pay (if configured and used) is nothing to worry about.

With that said, you are not obliged to use this technology if you choose to avoid it.

The simplest and most expeditious resolution to your current difficulty may be to simply add valid credit card details where prompted - so as to complete the setup - and then, if you choose to do so, delete the registered card when you have concluded setup of your new iPad.

If your iPad is unresponsive, perform a forced-restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.
