How to resolve 'Couldn't communicate with a helper application' error in Shortcuts repeat loops for HomePod playback?
Shortcuts Error: Couldn't communicate with a helper application in Repeat loops:
Issue Description:
I am attempting to create a "Time of Day" personal automation to play a repetitive voice reminder on my HomePod. Despite following standard procedures, the automation consistently fails with the error message: "Couldn't communicate with a helper application."
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a Personal Automation triggered by a Time of Day.
2. Set the Playback Destination to a HomePod (Living-room).
3. Use a Repeat Loop (e.g., 5–10 times).
4. Inside the loop, use either the Intercom or Speak Text action.
5. Add a Wait action (10 seconds) within the loop.
Observed Failures:
• Helper Application Error: When using Intercom inside a repeat loop, the shortcut crashes after the first or second iteration with the "helper application" error.
• Playback Destination Bug: When using Speak Text or Play Sound (from "Make Spoken Audio"), the audio consistently plays on the iPhone's internal speaker instead of the designated HomePod, even if "Set Playback Destination" is used successfully at the start of the shortcut.
• Memory/Handshake Issues: Moving the "Make Spoken Audio" action outside the loop (to generate the file only once) still results in the communication error when the Intercom action tries to broadcast that file repeatedly.
Device Information:
• iPhone Model: iPhone 14 Pro Max
• iOS Version: 26.1
• HomePod Model: HomePod Mini
• HomePod OS: 18.6 (22M84)
Requested Fix:
I am seeking a resolution for why the "Helper Application" (Shortcuts/Home communication) fails during loops and why "Set Playback Destination" is ignored by the "Play Sound" and "Speak Text" actions during automated runs.
