iPhone photo backup via Macbook Photos app won't detect or show all photos

Recently, when I connected by my iPhone 14 Pro to my Macbook via USB cable, it is unable to see all of my iPhone photos in the Photos app. It either 1) gets stuck on "preparing to import..", 2) says "No Photos," or 3) shows only 100-400 photos (I have 19,000+). I've been connecting my phone to my computer to back up to a hard drive weekly forever, I don't know why this is happening all of the sudden (post iOS 26 update, maybe?).
