Add simple pin code to face unlock to prevent police searches?

Police can force you to unlock your phone using face recognition unlocking without a warrant (the logic being you're not testifying against yourself by providing a passcode).

I like face unlock, but it opens my phone to a police search without a warrant. Is there any way to ask for a simple pin when unlocking a phone using facial recognition?

I don't want to use my full pin because that's longer and more complicated. If I have to use that, then there's no point to using face unlock.

Yes, I could turn off the phone using the upper left volume button and the right button (on an iPhone 14), but that takes a while (~2 secs) and is hard to do quickly/inconspicuously.

Thanks in advance

Ben

Temporarily disable Face ID

You can temporarily prevent Face ID from unlocking your iPhone.

  1. Press and hold the side button and either volume button for 2 seconds.
  2. After the sliders appear, press the side button to immediately lock iPhone.
  3. iPhone locks automatically if you don’t touch the screen for a minute or so.

The next time you unlock iPhone with your passcode, Face ID is enabled again.

The purpose of using Face ID is so you don't have to enter anything to unlock your phone, If you want to enter a code, then turn off Face ID. That Passcode can be a 4 digit PIN if you wish and the device is still protected as it could not be guessed without it locking first unless you used "1111" or "1234".

Problem Solved! Then you just need to worry about a warrant being served. Makes no sense to use one code to use Face ID, then authenticate with Face ID. You would still be required to enter your device passcode when restarted, so now you have a Passcode to unlock phone, and another code to use Face ID that it is a feature you would enable when you don't want to enter the Passcode.
