MacBook screen record black when mirroring iPad after update

Hello everyone,

I’ve been recording instructional videos for my students using a combination of my iPad and MacBook, and I’m running into an issue that just started today.

My workflow is as follows: I connect my external microphone directly to my MacBook so I can get higher audio quality. I then screen record from my MacBook. At the same time, I use screen mirroring from my iPad to my MacBook so I can present and write on the document I’m working on using Apple Pencil. This setup allows me to maintain good microphone quality while still having the flexibility to write and annotate in real time.

I’ve been using this exact setup successfully for about a year with no issues. Screen mirroring itself is still working — I can see my iPad display on my MacBook without any problem. However, when I start recording my screen on the MacBook, the resulting recording is completely black.

The only recent change I can think of is that I just updated my iPad to the latest version of iPadOS. Nothing else about my workflow or hardware has changed.

Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Screen recording how?

See if there is something in Privacy & Security that need permission(?)

for example: >System Settings>Privacy & Security>Screen & System Audio Recording

I have not tried this on 26.2 or with an iPad, but I did see this issue on 26.0.1 with an iPhone.

When I started a screen recording then went to Screen Mirroring on my iPhone and selected the Mac as the output, the screen on the Mac went black during the recording. This appears to be a bug in macOS Tahoe (top screenshot), since it worked fine in macOS Sequoia (bottom screenshot).
