GarageBand: Exported to disc MP3 files shorter than project?

Why are the projects I export to disc as mp3 files shorter than the saved project in GarageBand? Even when I move the track region 2-1/2 seconds from the header, the mp3 starts immediately; there isn't 2-1/2 seconds of silence.
