Suggestions for future MacBook Air: AI, cooling, privacy

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share a few suggestions for future MacBook Air models, especially as on‑device AI and NPUs become more important.

🔧 1. Optional cooling fan for better longevity

Even though Apple Silicon chips are efficient, all electronic devices degrade faster with heat.

A small optional fan could:

  • improve long‑term durability of the NPU and GPU,
  • reduce thermal throttling during AI workloads,
  • maintain stable performance for intensive tasks.

🔒 2. Hardware privacy features

It would be great to have:

  • a physical camera shutter,
  • a hardware switch to disable the microphone,
  • to increase user trust and privacy.

⚙️ 3. Basic performance mode + advanced options

A “basic performance mode” could disable non‑essential features to improve speed and battery life.

Advanced users could also benefit from optional settings to optimize local AI workloads or GPU acceleration.

🧠 4. Higher minimum RAM

With AI becoming more common on laptops, a minimum of 24 GB RAM would be ideal:

  • 8 GB for system and browsing,
  • 16 GB dedicated to local AI models or heavy tasks.

🚀 5. Stronger on‑device AI acceleration

As new chips like the M5 appear, a more powerful NPU would be very helpful for:

  • local AI processing,
  • media tasks,
