iPad shows unread messages despite being read on iPhone

suddenly Ipad shows loads of unread messages, yet all messages are read and show as read on iPhone.

Verify that messages in iCloud is setup on all devices to sync status. Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support
