Apple Watch functions as data source to Health app for steps, sleep, activity, heart and other.
When I start indoor cycle, I get verbal updates on my progress as I cycle.
This does not make sense.

The Apple Watch directly measures cycling distance for OUTDOORS workouts, as it has GPS and can use that to determine distance traveled. But there is no sensor in the Watch for indoor stationary cycling, it or the iPhone Health app would need to receive data from some other sensor on the stationary bike (indoors) but the Watch itself is not the data source. If you are doing indoor track cycling (not stationary bike) where the bike is moving, if GPS reception is working on the indoor track you could simply call it an outdoors cycling workout and the Watch's GPS would track and measure the distance properly. But a stationary bike has to send data from other sensors to the iPhone to record distance equivalent, which comes from the wheel diameter and number of revolutions.
