Hi can anyone tell me if Apple Watch Series 1 is compatible with iPhone 16. Nothing wrong with watch so don’t want to buy new one if not needed

Yes; if you get told to update the watch's OS, you may need to go to a physical Apple Store.

Theoretically yes, if you reset the watch completely and pair as New Watch.

However in practice you have a 10 year technology gap, and I remember people struggling even to pair iphone 12 with the totally obsolete Watch 1.
