Why does my iPad's battery drain so fast? I can use it for maybe an hour and then have to fully charge it again.

Probably needs the battery replaced and you should schedule an appointment at Apple to have it checked out. I am guessing this iPad is at least 6 years old, although it is not clear what model you are referring to.

A fitted case alone cannot extend battery life/autonomy. The only way to extend the period of battery autonomy, before the device must be recharged, is to reduce power consumption (such as by reducing screen brightness and/or reducing the use of CPU/GPU intensive Apps).
As you suggest, some iPad folio-style cases do have an embedded magnet that can automatically lock iPad and turn-off the screen when the cover is closed. This doesn't of itself reduce battery consumption while the iPad is being used, but will help to ensure that the screen is switched-off when the cover is closed - however, the iPad settings must be configured for this to occur. Unless explicitly configured to remain turned-on, an iPad will automatically lock and turn-off the screen when unused - whether or not it uses a fitted case.
Install the mobile Apple Support app and contact Apple using that. You can then optionally allow Apple technicians to have direct access to diagnostic data from your device.
