Mac mini Photos stuck syncing after SSD move

Hi all, hoping someone may be able to help me understand or even just give me some piece of mind I haven't lost some very important files.

I moved my 2tb photos library to a new 4tb SSD as the old drive was nearly full. Since then my M1 Mac mini has lost files for thousands of photos and videos. They still appear in my iCloud library on other devices but Apple photos on my Mac just says 'Syncing with iCloud...' and doesn't seem to progress.

Photos on my iPhone and iPad seems to be working fine. If I take a new photo on either device it syncs without issue and appears on the other device within a few seconds.

Both my previous and new library drives are good quality Samsung SSD's, 2.5 sata drives in an external enclosure. I copied the whole library across to the new drive.

I have a fear that these missing files may also have not been downloaded from iCloud to even the old drive.

Maybe I just need to have a little patience with it and let it do it's thing, but I have a feeling my issue started before I swapped the drives.

My Mac is up to date on Tahoe 26.2, Photos is up to date also.

I tried signing out of my apple account and iCloud and then back in. I made sure the setting has 'Download Originals to this Mac' selected. but so far the Mac doesn't seem to have made any progress in the 24 hours I have left it to Sync.

On my other devices using this library I have a total of 93,817 items, but the Mac is stuck on 88,297 and has been for the 24 hours since I did the log out and back in. Hadn't made any progress prior to that either.

Thanks in advance.

This should be the default but make sure that Finder > Get Info of the external drive it has "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom Sharing & Permissions. Also make sure the drive is formatted as case-insensitive.

Make sure the drive is connected directly to the Mac (no hubs) and try different ports and cables. Is the drive self-powered or does it have an external power supply which is more robust? Check the drive with Disk Utility. Does a detour to safe mode help? Do not use any 3rd party "cleaners", VPN or virus apps that often produce obscure errors and corruption.

All of this is as I have it.

I do have CleanMyMac X installed and run that every so often.
Could this have caused an issue?

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Security Risks: The Dangers of Using Free VPNs (eccu.edu).

Additionally, a new study ("Apple Offers Apps With Ties to Chinese Military”) is specifically about VPN apps in Apple’s App Store.

Follow leonie and Matti's recommendations about removing CleanMyMac and its supporting files. You can use the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with a particular file name.  For CMM software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be Option dragged from the search results window to the Desktop to get a copy of the file.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Thanks Richard,

Yes, it definitely seems like a video issue.

I can see all the videos fine on all the devices, and play them without issue once they load from the cloud.

They never seem to stay downloaded to the Mac though. They load each time, even if I pay the video a second time straight away.

I'm having success the last 24 hours by exporting the unmodified originals to a spare 1tb old hdd I had laying around. Doing that is forcing the videos to download and they seem to be staying on the new SSD for good.

Hopefully I'll find the file that may be causing the issue as I go.

I think it'll be a slow process though :)

If it works, my next fear is that the new 4tb SSD I just spent a fortune on may already be getting pretty full!

I think I need to rethink my whole storage strategy. And while I'm at it, do a better job at backing up the original files.

Just be patient. Don't change any iCloud Settings for Photos. That could cause a new sync from scratch all over again.

But it would help restart all Photos background processes occasionally by signing out of your user account and signing in again.

added: when I tested the trial version CleanMyMac it messed around with the originals in the Photos Library and caused many incorrect links, that even the Library repair tool in Photos could not fix. I hope you still have a backup copy of your library from the time before you started using Clean My Mac.

How long ago has it been that you moved the library to a new drive? Your library is huge, so it may take a very long time to get it fully synced again.

It would have been more economic to start over with a new, empty Photos Library and not sync the copy of the old library with iCloud. Now iCloud Photos has to upload all photos again, that are already in iCloud to compare them with iCloud. By starting over with an empty, new library you would have avoided the upload and just downloaded the library from iCloud as it is now. This way it would have been easier to see the progress.

Ok, so after a few days of selecting a few months of photos and videos and watching a slide show I have the number down to 1,525 downloading.

I now can't get that number any lower.

What I have found however is that after turning off the wifi to the Mac and looking at the videos, I can't watch videos offline from September 1st 2024. Video files from this date to current haven't downloaded to the Mac.

Even taking a photo with my phone doesn't seem to download without intervention from me. Once the photo appears on my Mac in the Photos Library, I need to open it and wait for the white circle in the bottom right for a second or two before it shows one less number to download.

Do you see these videos at iCloud.com? Do you see them on your phone? That is, is the problem between the phone and iCloud, or is it between iCloud and the Mac?

Videos can be a problem. The codecs change without warning, and .mov doesn't always mean the same thing. And videos seem to be more sensitive to corruption-- for video, it's still the Wild Wild West out there, and there's no law West of the Pecos. (or East, for that matter…)

Can you run the videos at iCloud.com? (I swear-- iCloud.com seems flaky on Safari, but it works in FireFox for me-- don't know why…) A single corrupt file can interrupt all downloading, so maybe if you find it, you can start up the process again.

It has been a few days maybe 4 or 5 since I moved it to the new SSD.

Ok, that makes sense.

I seem to have everything back now as of today. I can see all my photos and videos again for the first time since making the move. I seemed to have to keep shutting down photos and reopening it to push it along again.

Since earlier today however it has hit 'Downloading 5,519 originals and stalled again.

Been stuck at this number for 11 hours or more.

I'm wondering if it has reached the video section and will take much longer with that.
