Not getting 10% military discount, it’s 6%. Very odd.

I was trying to make a iPhone 17 purchase (pay in full price). Completed military validation via ID.me within Apple.com page. However the price did not reflect 10% discount. Instead it was somewhere between 6-7% discount. The full price is $799 for regular iPhone 17 with 256GB storage, the discounted price is $746. Does anyone know why?

Your cost basis is incorrect. The phone costs $829, not $799. You get a $30 discount if you connect it to a carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, or Boost), making it $799, but I’m not sure if that can be combined with the military discount.

$829 - 10% off (82.90) = $746.10.

Thanks. I figured that out too. It doesn’t make sense that using Apple’s labor to activate the phone cost less than activating the phone elsewhere. Must be some kind of special deal between Apple and those carriers.

Presumably each carrier would like you to connect to them up front – because the chances might then be lower that you will decide to switch to another carrier. The carrier will get $30 back from you very quickly if you stick with their service for any length of time.
