How to add HomePod mini to the Home app?

Can't seem to add my daughter's HomePod Mini to my Home app. I get my phone close to the speaker (in the Home app, 'add accessory') and it pseudo connects to it (music screen) but it doesn't add it to the actual app.

What am I doing wrong here?
