Password app is locked on iPad but not iPhone, how do I fix?

I have an iPad and an iPhone and the password app is on both. On the iPad suddenly the password app is locked and it won’t even respond to a request to change the password. But it works fine on the iPhone. I have turned the iPad off and on. Now what?

The Passwords app uses the passcode set for the device if Face ID or Touch ID (depending on iPad Model) is not enabled.

When enabled, it will default to either Face ID or Touch ID, and not offer an option for a passcode. It also has no option to change the passcode used with it, as that is the device passcode. You would need to go to Settings ➜ Face/Touch ID & Passcode ➜ Change Passcode to actually change it.

Is it not responding to Face ID or Touch ID when opened?

Do you not have Face ID or Touch ID enabled for your iPad? In Settings ➜ Face/Touch ID & Passcode?

Are you maybe using a 3rd party password app?

Please provide details and context regarding your issue, and we may be able to help.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
