How do I fix 'Sound (1211)' extension process exited issue on Mac mini?

Hello

I have an M1 2020 Mac mini running iOS 26.2.

Audio is input via Esi U24XL USB interface. Audio input is a microphone via a Behringer mixer into the analog in; Output optically t a. Douk Audio amp.

Everything was working fine utill the other day I couldn't hear audio from one particular app (Anyware PCoiP used to access a remote PC). Music, Chrome, etc. all work fine. I could access and hear the remote machine on another Mac, so the remote machine was not the issue.

[Re-Titled by Moderator]

Original Title: Sound (1211)' exited.

However, now, it is not recognising my mic and when I flick between input and output in sounds in settings its very sluggish and then I got the the message: Extension Process 'Sound (1211)' exited.

I have attached the interface to another Mac and it all works fine, so I don't think it's the interface, but something specific to the Mac mini.

Has anyone got any ideas about what I can do to try and fix this issue?

Thanks in anticipation.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
