Are you using Account Recovery? This method is only necessary when you do not have another Trusted Device or a valid Trusted Phone Number set up on your Apple Account in order to reset the Password immediately. In some cases, financial information can also be used to reset your Password immediately when there is sufficient information on file to prove your identity.

Beyond that the steps for Account Recovery are:

  • Receive email within 72 hours that will tell you the additional amount of time that you will need to wait. Access to this email is not necessary and you cannot reset your password from that email.
  • Only after additional time stated in the email will you receive a Text or Phone Call with the instructions to reset your Password.

Now if you did not receive the email or Text Message after the waiting period in the email, then it is likely that the request was cancelled depending on how you started the recovery request. This is stated clearly in the Support Article for Account Recovery:

  • Turn off all other devices that are currently signed in with your Apple Account until account recovery is complete. If your Apple Account is in use during your request, your account recovery will be cancelled automatically.
  • If you started your account recovery in Settings, System Settings, or the Apple Support app, you can continue to use that specific device during the account recovery period.

And finally to prevent having to go through Account Recovery in the future, make sure your information for your Trusted Phone Number is accurate. You can also set up a Recovery Contact that will make changing your password much easier.
