Updated to OS 26.2 and Apple Pencil no longer works

I updated my iPad (10th generation) to iPadOS 26.2 and now my Apple Pencil pairs but won't write. I've repaired it, forced a restart on the iPad, turned the bluetooth on and off. Nothing works. I have drawing apps that I've paid for but cannot use. Suggestions please?
