Can Pixelmator Pro compete with Photoshop?

My Adobe subscription is up soon, and I'm not happy with their charges, so looking for an alternative. Beyond the basics, I have a few actions I'm not sure it can do. I specifically wish to know from any users if the following are possible or have high-quality results.

  1. Subject cutout or background removal
  2. Expanding an image background, including a person's body as part of the image
  3. Organising photos like Lightroom - I'm not sure if Photomator is continuing.

Thanks in advance.

Great question! Sorry I'm no expert on Pixelmator Pro, yet there's some pretty good Apple documentation online.

If you don't receive the answers you seek from experienced users in the community, maybe this info. can assist

Seems the Pixelmator Pro User Guide is available:

https://support.pixelmator.com/pixelmator-pro-user-guide

Re:(1)

Eg: says: "Automatically edit images"

" Remove the background from any image with just a click" (6 second video available)

or

" Instantly hide the background of a subject with a mask"

"Hide Background uses an intelligent, AI-powered algorithm to detect a subject in an image

and the background using a mask, keeping all fine details like hair or fur intact."

Don't know about your (2) and (3) ... there's a good index in the above user guide, leading to various articles.

There's also a Pixelmator Pro Tools User Guide:

Eg: says:

"Pixelmator Pro has more than 40 image editing tools for retouching, reshaping, painting, drawing, adding shapes, text, styles, and effects, adjusting colors, selecting image areas, moving and arranging elements."

More textural info: About Pixelmator Pro - Apple Support

Eg: says: "Pixelmator Pro compared to Photomator

To create designs from scratch by combining images, shapes, or text, use Pixelmator Pro.

For fast photo-editing workflows with the ability for batch editing, use Photomator."

( More info. in above linked article.)

I have not tried the most recent version of Pixelmator Pro - I hope it has changed by now When I first tied it when it came out, I have been disappointed. But if you liked Adobe Photoshop, you might like Pixelmator as well. Just like Photoshop Pixelmator is combining photo editing and graphics in one app. This results in a cluttered user interface with many, many tools and the necessity to use different states, so not all tools are available at all times.

I prefer photo centric image editors, just like Aperture used to be, where the image developing tools are clearly separate from graphics tools, for example Affinity or Luminar Neo. But even Affinity is using different states(called personae in Affinity), so I am using it only as a photo editing extension to Photos. My main external editor ist Luminar Neo. Luminar Neo can remove the background and extend the background, has an own catalogue and is available on macOS as well es iOS and can sync your Luminar Catalogue between the devices. I don't use the catalog, however - iPrefer iCloud Photos for syncing

Have you seen that Pixelmator Pro will be available as a part of Apple Creator Studio - Apple ? If you are using the other creative apps like Final Cut and Motion, Logic Pro as well, it might be the best option for you to get Pixelmator for only a small fee together with all the other creative tools.
