M3 Air: Hiservices-xpcservice not responding after sleep
Problem: Persistent com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice (Not Responding) - Duplicate Processes after Sleep (M3 Air)
System Configuration:
- Device: MacBook Air (M3 Chip)
- OS: macOS Tahoe 26.2
- Issue: com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice hangs consistently.
Hello to the community,
I am experiencing a persistent issue where com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice stops responding. This does not happen immediately upon boot, but typically occurs after waking the Mac from sleep or after about 20-30 minutes of usage.
Key Symptoms:
- Duplicate Processes: When the issue occurs, Activity Monitor shows two instances of the service:
- One instance is "Red" (Not Responding) with a static PID.
- A second instance is "Blue" (Active/Running) with a new PID.
- No High CPU: The hung process sits at low CPU (0.0% - 0.1%) but never recovers.
- Clean "Open Files": Inspecting the "Open Files and Ports" of the hung process shows no third-party files (only /System/Library/...paths).
What I Have Done So Far (Extensive Troubleshooting):
I have performed a complete manual removal of potential conflict apps (Microsoft Office/Teams, Zoom, Proton Drive, WhatsApp, XMind etc ) to rule out file conflicts.
1. File Cleanup (Verified Empty/Deleted):
- Removed all related apps from /Applications.
- Cleared ~/Library/Containers & ~/Library/Group Containers for all Microsoft/Zoom/Cloud drive apps.
- Cleared ~/Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchAgents, and /Library/LaunchDaemons (Removed files like com.microsoft.update..., us.zoom..., licensing.helper, etc.).
- Cleared /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL (Removed MSTeamsAudioDevice.driver and ZoomAudioDevice.driver).
- Cleared ~/Library/CloudStorage (Removed Third party cloud Drive).
2. System Resets & Terminal Commands:
- QuickLook: Reset cache via qlmanage -r cache.
- Accessibility: Reset permissions via tccutil reset Accessibility.
- Launch Services: Rebuilt the database using the lsregister -kill -r command to remove "ghost" menu entries.
- Background Tasks: Reset BTM via sfltool resetbtm.
3. Settings Adjustments:
- Disabled "Handoff" in System Settings.
- Disabled "Dictation".
- Verified that no deleted apps remain in System Settings > Privacy > Accessibility.
- Verified that no deleted apps are checked in System Settings > Keyboard > Services.
Has anyone else on M3 / macOS Tahoe seen this specific "Duplicate Process" behaviour after sleep? Any advanced insight is appreciated.
