I wouldn't fool with changing the MAC address even if it's technically possible. It's a great way to create problems for yourself.
You can change the Mac's "computer name" as it appears on the network. Edit the computer name in the Sharing pane in System Preferences (aka System Settings).

You Can't. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control; it has nothing to do with the proper noun Mac.
Thank you. I stated my question poorly. The mac address shows up instead of the local name. It was a router issue on the local network and a software installation identification issue from a software provider. It just took me a while to get the idea.
The MAC address is hexadecimal, so the host name is also hexadecimal.
