Mac Finder: iCloud file 'authenticate' error

When I try to use the Finder to load certain files from iCloud, I see this error message:

"Can't open file. You need to authenticate before accessing this item."

or just:

"You need to authenticate before accessing this item."

Here's the problem.

I am logged into my Mac.

I am logged into my Apple account

I am logged into my iCloud+ subscription.

So where the heck and how the heck do I authenticate?

I've seen lots of reports of this that were fixed by logging out of one's iPad or iPhone.

  1. This is not an iPad or iPhone; it's a MacBook.
  2. Logging out and logging back in did not fix anything.

Thanks to people staffing the Apple Support phones, I can share a possible fix. (The cause remains unknown.)

I rebooted my Mac in safe mode. The problem did not occur.

Then I rebooted my Mac not in safe mode. The problem still did not occur. Whatever bit got set was cleared by safe mode.

So, if you run into the same problem, try a safe reboot. It's something to try even if we still don't know the actual cause.

This has been true for me: Talking to an actual person at Apple first addresses and then solves my problems. The Apple people with whom I interact have this talent: they try to solve the person's problem. That takes balance. If all you see is the technical aspect of the problem, you're not a whole lot better than a large-language model (a/k/a artificial intelligence). If you can integrate the human and technical aspects of a problem, that's how you get the top rating in a post-service survey.

Hard skills and soft skills work well together. Thanks to the people at Apple Support.

I didn't mention two-factor authentication. I did test 2FA; it had no effect. My reason for not mentioning it is that the problem is 2FA agnostic. I also didn't mention that country that I live in nor whether my dominant hand is the right or the left, for exactly the same reason. I try not to clutter my posts or my responses with irrelevant data.

How I wish I had kept the link to that parody of lurkers commenting on the Apollo 13 situation with comments like "If you used Linux to run the CM's computer, you wouldn't have this problem."
