M4 MacBook Pro 16-inch display visibility and color issues

M4 MacBook Pro 16-inch display problems.

I just got a refurbished 16-in M4 MacBook Pro (currently running Sequoia, waiting for the next Tahoe release to update the OS). I'm having vision issues with the laptop's display. First of all, I have to use light mode instead of dark mode for visual accessibility reasons. However, in default settings all of the text is gray on a slightly less gray background, making text hard to read. I've tried increasing the contrast and brightness. This works for me on other devices, but not so much with this laptop.

With other computers, I've been able to customise the color space of the display. I prefer a white point of 6000 with added contrast. This was all adjustable in the past, doesn't seem to be now without a professional calibration device. So what can I do to increase visibility in this new-to-me laptop?

get away from the contrast and brightness settings and use this procedure to get to a good starting point:

no external calibrator device required for these steps.

I prefer light mode, and have never liked dark mode.

From your description, it sounds possible that your text may be set too small for long term comfort. Small thin black letters appear nearly gray, but larger or Bolder ones will seem more solidly black.

try using a different setting for scaled to make the text larger. if you hate it, is easy enough to undo.

Unfortunately, all I get in terms of calibration is a hex grid to set a white point, which isn't useful. The old visual calibrator worked wonderfully well, but this doesn't. I'm still squinting to see menu text, which I can't seem to make darker. I tried going to OS 26, which was a mistake, but now I'm stuck with it.

This is extremely frustrating. The other option is using a calibration device. We had one of those where I used to work, and it refused to give me any settings that worked with my eyes.

I wish Apple would give us back the old visual manual calibration system.

(Also, why can't I put folders in any old place on the desktop in Mac OS26? I have this problem on two different machines now. Is it because I have to set the desktop to the smallest screen resolution to get larger type?)

Should I have bought a MacBook Air instead of a Pro?
