Sounds like the way that auto manufacturers name their cars. A "2026" car generally will have been introduced close to the end of 2025.
As far as Apple's past behavior goes, since 2013, just about every major version of any OS has been released in September or October. Exceptions:
- macOS 11 (Big Sur) came out in November
- watchOS 1 came out in April
- visionOS 1 came out in February
All of these exceptions may be related to the timing of releasing new products – in the case of Big Sur, the first Apple-Silicon-based Macs.
So car-model-year-type version numbering wouldn't have required much (if any) change to the way that they set their development schedules.
