I opened my MacBook Pro and I had a solid black screen and could only see the cursor. Nothing was working so I turned it off and back on. Now I can get to the login screen. After entering my password, it sticks at 50% and will not move passed there. Any ideas how to get logged in?

I think I would try and Start up your Mac in safe mode to see if you can then login. and if you can, run the Mac in safe mode for roughly 5 minutes then reboot normally to see if the issue is resolved. sometimes a safe boot followed by a normal boot can fix issues.
Thanks. I had to re load sequoia onto it and that eventually worked so I can now get into it. I think it tried to do an update to the new OS overnight and something must have gone wrong with it.
It came up saying safe boot in the corner but the login screen now has a wheel that just keeps going around
