What error are you receiving with VLC or Tahoe 26.2? You didn't clarify if you were attempting to use Apple's AirPlay or AirPlay 2 to the Sony TV from your Mac. I do not see any XR-prefix Sony TVs supported for that purpose for either version of AirPlay.
Do you have any other (e.g. free IINA) video playing software that does work when playing video to your Sony TV? This is the first update to the VLC 3 code stream in over 18 months, their largest update and bug fix, according to them, and it may or may not be entirely compatible with Tahoe 26.2.
Try this. Power off the Sony TV and your MacBook Pro. Connect the quality HDMI 2.1 cable between your MacBook Pro and the Sony TV — to a different HDMI port on the TV. Power on the TV and use its settings to switch to the connected HDMI port on it.
Now, boot your MacBook Pro and via System Settings > Sound, redirect your audio output to the TV that should be recognized there. On your System Settings > Displays panel, set the proper selection for When connected to TV.
Now launch VLC 3.0.23 (or IINA) and play your video.
If this is a compatibility issue with the new VLC 3.0.23, then you may need to contact them, and/or wait for the release of macOS 26.3 (in case the VLC team was working with that beta) and not the released Tahoe 26.2.
Sorry for being unclear. Sony XR model do have Airplay. I know you can use a cable. But I prefer streaming from my MacBook pro wirelessly.(The laptop & the Sony Oled TV are on the same wifi) It worked beautifully with VLC until my update to Tahoe 26..2. I have also tested IiNa with the same result. But then I came across Elmidia Video Player, which I tested and when searching my Sony XR model turned up. In order to get this to work you have to purchase the PRO version. -- I also tested opening Control Center, tapped the Screen Mirroring icon & select my Sony XR TV to mirror entire screen. That also works. Thanks for your help & for your advise to contact VLC. Rgds / Carl
