For the past couple weeks, my installation of Chrome has been slugging across all tabs. I've not changed any of my usual behavior. Today, I updated to Version 144.0.7559.97, to no avail.
My MacOS is fully updated, too. So that's not the issue.

Is there a reason that you are using Chrome? It's a memory hog at the best of times. Not to mention the privacy implications. On a Mac, I recommend Safari. If you want one that's like Chrome, look at Brave.
All that said, I do use Chrome on my Mac (having to do with work) and have no difficulties. I wonder if the fact that you're running an older version of macOS could be part of the problem. I'm running 26.2.

May consider an alternative https://brave.com which is essentially Google Chrome without the Google baggage
