You would need to erase the hard drive and install another version from scratch using a bootable USB drive or macOS Recovery.

Make sure you backup any files and data you want to preserve as returning to a previous macOS version is a fully destructive process and will erase everything.

click here ➜ Use macOS Recovery on an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support

or here ➜ Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

With that said, fans running means the CPU and other components need to be cooled down. Having the fans run means the components won't overheat. After an update it's normal for the CPU to work harder than normal to finish up background tasks. It should after a few days return to normal though.

What year/model is your iMac? Is it an Intel chip or Silicon chip iMac?

My MacBook Pro 2019 16" Intel laptop was upgraded to Tahoe from Sequoia. I thought the fans were more active for a few days, especially during Time Machine backups or just after. However now I almost never hear the fans anymore, which is how it was under Sequoia. Keeping in mind, my Intel laptop is the oldest Mac laptop that can even run Tahoe, so I would expect it to work a bit harder than a Silicon one. However, what I have observed is that Tahoe seems to run smoother than Sequoia did. Also I have noticed some improvements and bug fixes in Tahoe.

One thing you might do is investigate your Display and Accessibility settings and turn off or lessen some of the new visual "features" added by Tahoe. For instance the liquid glass and motion settings, these all use a bit more energy. I initially turned them off but now have them back on again and it seems fine with or without them active now.

hey Allen, I did the SMC restart thing and BINGO fans are no longer running like a hurricane!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

OH I was going to edit my post with the report and remove the report but I dont see an edit button on the post, is there a way to remove that report?

I think your entire history in this thread would be useful and helpful to others who are experiencing the symptoms you experienced. Including how you solved it (good work!). So I would not remove any posts nor the report, it comprises a good case history we all can learn from.

HW, thanks for the info. Honestly I have no idea what a NTFS file system is!?! I have had this brand of EHD before and this paragon thing never was installed, except this last time I bought them. It has been a few months ago.

But here's the thing Before the upgrade 4 days ago to os26 I had no issues at all, even in the past when running Lightroom and photoshop at the same time.

Good Morning Allen, thanks so much! I just thought about something after answering @HWTech about the EHD, and you mentioning the "entry-level US external drive". When you say that do you mean cheep/poor quality correct?

I had mentioned to HWTECH that my last EHD was the same brand but I remembered wrong they were "my book for Mac" EHD. I'm not sure maybe they were entry level too. ;)

do you have any suggestions for EHD brands? Something good but don't cost an arm and a leg! ;)

in the past before the upgrade to 26 a few days ago I could run Lightroom and photoshop at the same time and I never even noticed the fan running, if it did it was nothing like it is now!

Now it runs as soon as the screen lights up, and on high speed.

I'm going to follow SMC reset like you guys suggested and see what happens, before I do that I will disconnect both the EHD also do a restart.

thanks so much for you and @HWTECH for sharing your knowledge. I'll be back with an update!

Good Morning Owl-53, thank so much for the info. In the past when upgrading(before26) I would get a window the said something about a "legacyEXT" that was not compatible. I had no idea what it was, how I got it or what to do with it. So I assume I don't need it because I don't know what virtual audio routing even is. ;)

I'm not tech savvy at all, so can you tell me how to remove this sunflower thing?? I usually can follow the steps if you can help that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Becky

Copy the first command into Terminal and press Return on the keyboard

This will execute that command

Using the second command copy and paste and press Return on keyboard

This executes that command

Third command copy and post and again Return

All done

Restart the computer

Thank you so much for your help! one last question ;) I'm a little confused.

I copied the steps from your post.

on the last command it says install. What am I installing? I thought I was uninstalling.

To avoid possible Typo errors

Copy and paste into Terminal each of the 3 commands in the order that are presented

Command 1 >. sudo kextunload /Library/Extensions/Soundflower.kext

Command 2 >> sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/Soundflower.kext

Commad 3 >>> sudo kmutil install --update-all

Owl-53 well I'm back with another question! Sorry!
after I put in the first command and hit return it said PASSWORD I tried the password to start my Mac but could not type anything!? any thoughts?

The Password will not echo on the screen and you just type the password used to log into your Mac and hit Return. Didn't mean to interject, but wanted to let you know so you can continue.

Thanks Jim, when finished I got line after line of errors and warnings, so not sure what happened, I copy and pasted as stated.

I will have to let Owl-53 respond back with additional details as I am not familiar with the commands they were using. I just wanted to let you know that the Password will not appear on the screen when typed. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

If you have a screenshot of those errors or are able to copy/paste it may save some time for when they do see your post. Owl-53 is a respected member on this Support Site and not one to just leave a person hanging. Unfortunately we do not have a direct way to notify them other than the email notification they will see, so once they see that I would expect they will respond.
