Search in photos app not working on mac studio

Hi,

I am using iCloud for all my photos. On my Mac studio with Tahoe 26.2 "Search" does not show any hits.

When I typ "A" on my MacBook I have 18.639 hits – on my Mac Studio zero!

Already used the "rebuild database" funktion (How to use the Photos Repair Library tool on your Mac - Apple Support)

Any ideas???

Could you give us more information?

  • Where does your Mac's Photos Library reside-- in the Pictures folder of your internal drive, or on an external drive? or on a network? on iCloud drive?
  • If your Library is on an external drive, how is it formatted?
  • Do you have “Optimize Storage” checked in Photos’ Settings
  • How large is your Library?
  • Do all your devices agree with iCloud (petty much) on the number of items in the Library?
  • How long has the Studio had since the last OS update you did? It needs time to scan and categorize your Library--a large Library can take over a week.
  • How much free memory do you have in the Studio? Apple recommends at least 10% of the storage should remain free. I've seen trouble with less than 15% free.
  • What do you get if you use a Smart album for "Text contains A?"

To narrow things down, try these steps:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it.  This is a bit harder, because a new user can't access a different user's stuff. You would need to temporarily move your Library out of your own user's Pictures folder up to the general "Users" folder.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.
