Files snapping to the top right even though no stacking or sorting by is enabled that would result in such behaviour.

When I save a file to my desktop from an app or by dragging and dropping from a different location the file icon occasionally snaps to the top right of my desktop/screen. It sticks to this location and cannot be dragged elsewhere as it always snaps back the moment it's released. It even overlays the Macintosh HD icon which is traditionally at the top right. And every following saved or dragged consecutive file snaps to the top right too. Stack by is set to NONE and sort by is SNAP TO GRID. There is no reason for this behaviour.

The only quick way to fix this seems to be command-/+ while on desktop to decrease and immediately increase all icon sizes. After that all saved or dragged files follow the correct order of lining up on empty desktop space and the snapping to the top right stops - until it eventually starts again.

Any ideas how to fix this for good?

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

If these screenshots/files are piling up on top of one another...(?)

there is a bug that seems to rear its head periodically, from the Terminal.app copy and paste:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop true; killall Finder

This perfectly describes it. Its files (such as screenshots) all pile up on each other at the same top right spot. And they cannot be moved elsewhere due to that snapback effect.

I''l try your suggestions. I am sure it'll fix the problem... for a while. It seems to reappear every now and then.

Thanks and I'll report back.

changing grid spacing or icon size has the same effect in sorting the issue...

Command J while on the Desktop

I just find the Terminal command faster and easier

It has gotten much better—in the current stable release of Tahoe including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 26.2 Keep your Mac up to date - Apple Support

but still surprised periodically
