Sequoia 15.7.3 Mail Crashing Frequently

It has become really unstable, apparently.

And it's been an issue at least since 15.2,

according to earlier posts.

C'mon Apple!!!

Wondering what happens just before Mac Mail crashes ... same action every time ? or no evident pattern ?

Also wondering what you have tried already:

Eg: Apple support has an article online (link below) that may be helpful.

If an app on your Mac stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support

If you haven't already:

Restarting your Mac (Apple menu > Restart) deletes temporary files, re-establishes connections, may update recent setting changes, and more; often restores order if something is not working as expected.

Re: "Crashing Frequently"

Finding the cause allows for applying a solution. (Not all Macs have the same cause for a given issue.)

We'd like to help, yet we don't know much about:

    • which Mac model (year) you are using,
    • how much free memory / storage space is available, (pref 50 Gb to allow for smooth operation of all tasks)
    • whether unnecessary third-party apps like virus-checkers, ad-blockers, cleaners and the like (even VPN) are installed / causing interference: (Turning them off or pref. using uninstallers from their developers may help.)
    • whether any necessary third-party apps are updated to remain compatible and not cause issues

(Some apps, up-to-date or not, may also "hog" resources needed for other tasks )

(Eg: Chrome browser is notorious for CPU use ... try another browser (eg: Firefox)

If you wish: You can send feedback to reach those who work on the "Mail" app software behind-the-scenes at Apple. They will likely not reply, yet your feedback will be carefully read and logged. If others do experience similar issues, and the "Mail" app is found to be the cause, there will likely be an update that addresses the issues. The more feedback Apple receives on which hardware models and software versions are affected, the more likely we will see an update. Web-form for feedback: Feedback - Mail - Apple

Thank you for your reply, and for checking storage.

Sometimes the file that stores your Mail preferences becomes corrupt.

You might want to try deleting that file.

Eg: Quit the Mail app

In the Finder's "Go" menu, scroll right down to click "Go to Folder"

paste this path: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences/

click return to go there

File to delete is: com.apple.mail.plist

Then restart your Mac: Apple menu > Restart

Re-open Mail app

Thank you for your reply, and for the additional info.

Re: "200GB available on 1TB SSD"

Is that an external drive, or the Mac's internal Fusion drive ?

(ie: It is the Mac's internal drive that needs at least 50 Gb free.

ie: : System Settings (or Prefs) > General > Storage )

Re: "Happens randomly".

Could a particular Mail account need attention, (eg: Gmail, Yahoo)

or have random crashes happened regardless of account in use. ?

Re: "No crazy extensions open".

Thank you for checking.

Wondering if your Mac restarts by itself after it crashes, or whether you have to "Force Quit" the Mail app:

If Mac restarts by itself, the trouble-shooting steps in the article below may help:

If your Mac restarts and a message appears - Apple Support

Else: another step to try:

You may want to open Activity monitor app, (is in Applications > "Utility" folder.) and look to see whether unusually high CPU use occurs for some Mac processes.

If so, you could send us a screenshot, using the image insertion tool, (second icon from the right end) of the toolbar under a reply window.

Re: "Mail just crashed. I was deleting the junk mail".

Junk Mail for a particular account (eg: Gmail, Yahoo) ?

If so, perhaps the account has a problem ...

If you trace crash-events to a particular Mail account, you could try deleting, and then restoring the account. (The re-indexing may help.)

Else: wondering if your network connection is a strong one.

Re: "Sent report to Apple, although tat doesn't seem to help matters ;-)"

Thank you. It won't help immediately.

Yet if others have issues too, your feedback may contribute to a fix.

(Apple would get to see which hardware models and software versions are affected)

Good. Thank you for checking, and for sharing your findings.

One possibility may be that your Gmail account is nearly over the limit for the 15 Gb storage (that includes Gmail, Photos, and Google Drive) available on GMail's servers.

You may want to log-in to your Gmail account online, and check the settings you have in place for your Gmail.

ie: We can generally store messages using "On my Mac" folders in Mail, instead of, (or as well as) on an eMail provider's servers. However each provider has their own array of available settings.
