Apple Watch keeps asking for Apple ID password

My iwatch keeps asking me to "enter the password for my Apple ID". It keeps failing the password I use on all my other Apple devices when I enter it character by character on the watch face. But it lets me bypass the screen and access all my iCloud data - mail, contact, calendar, etc. - so I wonder what it's looking for a password for? Where can I enter it on some sort of keyboard?
