AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid not working, only hissing

My airpods pro 2 are not working as hearing aids. All I can hear is hissing. They are on the latest firmware and fully charged. My phone is also on the latest iOS. I’ve completed a hearing test and they are set to transparency in the noise reduction setting. The hearing aid feature is set to on.
