How to access an old iPad registered under a different Apple Account and password?

My Wife has an old iPad that I bought for her a few years ago. I registered in under my then Apple ID, but since have update it. Now it's asking for the password associated to the email account I first registered it under. I have changed my account ID and password since then. Now it's asking for the password for the email I first registered it under. The email account is still valid, but it won't send and Password change email. There is no way I will have that old password. What can I do now to get into her iPad to update it and register it under her name?

It's not clear what happened here.

Do you have a single Apple Account, for which you changed the main e-mail address? If so, you could try entering the current password associated with that Apple Account, and hope that the iPad takes it.

Or did you create two Apple Accounts? In that case, the only ways to remove the Activation Lock would be to know and use the password for the old Apple Account, or to make an Activation Lock support request. For the latter, you would need an original purchase receipt from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller.

So the old iPad is registered under a different Apple Account than the one you currently use. You will need to

  • Remember the Apple Account password,
  • Reset the Apple Account password, or
  • Provide Apple with the documentation required for them to remove Activation Lock

if you want to unlock the device.

I understand very little about Apple, but I did understand it was asking for the password of the previous account, which I don’t have. I did try to use that Activation form but it wants EIME, the cell numbers, but it’s WiFi only and there are none, so I couldn’t do that.

If the form allows you to leave those fields blank, and fill in the info you do have, you could try that. Otherwise, if you have the necessary proof-of-purchase documentation, you could try contacting Apple Support. Maybe they could help to get your request to the group inside of Apple who considers Activation Lock support requests.

From what you are saying and a lot of others I’ve read, the device is toast and going to the recycling plant.

That is the downside of security measures. If you put a deadbolt lock on the door to your house, and then lose the keys to your house while you are out, it's going to be hard to get back in. Maybe not impossible – but if you call up a locksmith to pick your lock, or a carpenter to cut open your door, they may want to see something that reassures them that you are the owner of the house, and not a clever thief.

The iPad won't request the password for the email account, it's requesting the password for the Apple account that used that email address as its primary email address.

If you know the password for the Apple account, you can simply enter it.

If you don't then you will need to recover access to the account. Since you have no access to the email you won't be able to receive the reset emails and you will need to contact Apple Support to have them remove the Activation lock screen.

I didn’t explain it well, sorry. I had two accounts. Basically, one account that I changed the ID, email address, on to clear up a password issue. The old email was what I originally registered the device. I understand very little about Apple, but I did understand it was asking for the password of the previous account, which I don’t have. From what you are saying and a lot of others I’ve read, the device is toast and going to the recycling plant. I do hate Apple! I know it’s a great platters all of that but it’s do complicated and proprietary it drives me crazy. Just working in this I had to try like four times to log into my iTunes account bc it wouldn’t take my password. I would then use my phone and the QR code and that could take a couple of tries. My wife makes me do all of hers as well and that’s where all of the password stuff comes from. My kids made me get Apple and I regret it to this day. I hate Apple. But, I do appreciate the help. Oh, and I’m old. That’s what the kids say is the problem. And, it probably is. Old people shouldn’t have Apple devices. Thank you.

I’m not sure. It was a long time ago. Bc it won’t let me change the email I have to assume I created a new account. I believe an Apple rep helped me at the time. I cannot use the Activation Block request bc it keeps asking for the cellular data and it’s WiFi only and besides I don’t t have the original receipt from years ago. I’ve owned it the whole time and it has never been registered by anyone other than me, which they can easily confirm, but sounds like they won’t even try. So, to the recycling plant it goes. Thanks for trying.
